Kuala Lumpur is known for its High-rise Towers and polished skyscrapers, but what most people don’t know is that aside from its tourist attractions and vast culture, Kuala Lumpur also offers a diverse selection of food you wouldn’t want to miss! And no, I’m not talking about the luxurious restaurants in the city, because today, I will be sharing with you the top 5 must try street foods in Kuala Lumpur!


1. Satay


First on the list is Satay. Satay is one of Malaysia’s best traditional dish and is also considered as the best Malaysian street food! Satay is prepared simply how you would prepare a normal barbeque, except, this dish is seasoned with a sweet and spicy peanut sauce before it is skewered on a bamboo stick and grilled over fire. It is usually served with ketupat (rice that is cooked on woven palm leaves) and a side dish of sliced onions and cucumbers. This usually costs about 2 MYR- 10 MYR.

2. Rojak

Rojak is Malaysia’s version of a salad which consists of cucumbers, pineapples, green mango, and jicama. It is covered in a pasty black sauce and is sprinkled with chopped ginger flowers and peanuts on top. It is usually served with a shrimp paste and peanuts. Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that they usually pair their cuisines with peanuts? A serving of Rojak usually costs about 2 MYR- 10 MYR.

3. NasiLemak



NasiLemak is considered as one of the traditional icons in Kuala Lumpur. It is the National Dish of Malaysia and is also one of the native dishes in some countries such as Singapore, Brunei, and even in the Bangsamoro Region of Mindanao in the Philippines.NasiLemak is a fragrant rice dish prepared using coconut milk and a pandan leaf.It is served with boiled eggs, baked peanuts, crispy anchovies, and sweet and spicy sambal. This is usually paired with something fried, and in most occasions, paired with chicken. A serving of NasiLemak usually costs around 9 MYR.

4. AsamLaksa


AsamLaksa is a rice noodle prepared in using coconut milk or a spicy fish broth. Some of its ingredients include sliced pineapples, shallots (a vegetable is commonly used for pickling and as a substitute for onions), and shrimp paste to add flavour and authenticity to the cuisine. This dish is also spiced up by adding a few shredded chili peppers. It is usually sold for around 7 MYR to 10 MYR.

5. IkanBakar

This cuisine is another one of those barbecued dishes except, instead of pork, chicken, or beef, the meat used for this one is fish. It is wrapped in a banana leaf before being grilled over fire (usually charcoal) which gives more spice and fragrance to the fish. It is served with a sauce made out of garlic, sliced chilli, and lime. This dish can be bought for approximately 10 MYR to 12 MYR.
